‘A Quiet Rebellion’ In Full Volume
JOE CHIA Join Forces With Mastermind Japan To Release Capsule Collection
Malaysia
June 2022

In a world that clamours for attention, resistance comes in the form of quiet confidence. Through a mutual understanding built on respect for purposeful design that speaks for itself, JOE CHIA and mastermind JAPAN come together to demonstrate their shared beliefs in a capsule collection titled “A Quiet Rebellion”. For a kinship that goes beyond needle and thread, this collaboration represents a synergy that surpasses the idea of both labels as strict disciples of minimalism and punk movement respectively. Upon second glance, this pairing may not be that unlikely after all.

A CONVERSATION STARTER WITHOUT WORDS: Mr Homma of Mastermind JAPAN was first introduced to Joe Chia through a piece worn by a buyer to his studio. It was a hooded sweater that made its mark—a humble silhouette that featured distinct yet discreet detailing.

AN IMMEDIATE RECKONING: A camaraderie was built on similar ethos towards craftsmanship and respect for the wearer and the many hats they wear.

A TALE ACROSS KUALA LUMPUR, TOKYO AND PARIS: The insightful exchanges over dinners to collection previews every season became an ongoing sketch that embodies the shared knowledge and spirit of the two labels. Five years later, a collaboration was born.

The collaboration stands as a dialogue between both labels, one that considers purpose, intention and unapologetically strives towards achieving function and form. Sharp tailoring, plush materials, muted colours, discreet detailing—all distilled into a capsule consisting of a jacket, a hooded sweater, a t-shirt and pants. Signature elements include stainless steel hardware— an insignia that features each label on each side and a batik motifthat incorporates mastermind JAPAN’s skull and crossbones, referencing JOE CHIA’s Southeast Asian roots.

Paying homage to the FW16 ‘Not Afraid’ piece that marked the genesis of this relationship, The 117 Turenne Sweater is a reinterpretation updated with stainless steel aglets on the drawstrings; ‘Lintas’ – The Batik Harrington Jacket features a reversible silk lining in printed batik, adorned with mastermind JAPAN’s signature D-rings, zipper and buttons; ‘Caya’ – The Cargo Drop Crotch Pants showcases the labels’ affinity for unassuming, yet effective details through the detachable carabiner and embroidered
logos on the back.

Rather than being loud declarations of ingenuity, purposeful design and its details are bound to be crystal clear to those who pay close attention. The collection will be launching on 10th June 2022 exclusively at Isetan The Japan Store Kuala Lumpur and on 17th June 2022 at selected stockists worldwide.
